Judging by the Martensville recreational facilities schedule, August 27 is the day when summer ends and winter starts.
Martensville Recreation and Community Services Director Ted Schaeffer told the Martensville City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 15 that the city’s aquatic centre’s last day of operation would be Sunday, August 27.
He added that is also the opening day of operations for the Martensville Sports Centre arena.
“The rink opens that day for the start of the annual 3-on-3 hockey tournament,” said Schaeffer. “The dehumidifier should be up and running, which will significantly cut down on the amount of condensation in the building.”
Schaeffer said the decision to close the Martensville Aquatic Centre August 27 is based on staffing issues.
“Most of the pool staff are young people,” said Schaeffer. “And with university starting prior to the September Labour Day long weekend, that really limits the number of staff we’re able to have on duty for that final week of August.”
Schaeffer said a food concession contractor has been hired for the arena for the coming season.
The Martensville 3-on-3 tournament is organized by the Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP). The tournament runs through September 17, with funds raised by the event going toward the new Martensville multi-purpose recreational facility currently under construction west of Highway 12.
Schaeffer said the tentative dates for the Prairie Sculptors Symposium hosted by Martensville will be August 5 through 16. The event will take place near the Martensville Athletic Pavilion.
The August 15 council meeting was Schaeffer’s last one as Director of Recreation and Community Services. He is retiring this fall. Martensville Mayor Kent Muench expressed thanks to Schaeffer on behalf of the city for his years of service to the city.
LANE RESTRICTIONS
Martensville City Council passed a resolution at its August 15 meeting to approve partial lane closures for Centennial Drive North to accommodate the A&W 100 Show and Shine on September 9.
The outdoor car show is traditionally one of the biggest events of the season for Martensville, drawing hundreds of people from across the region. The car show is followed by a feature race at the Sutherland Automotive Speedway that evening.
