Warman’s Cara Kesslering (middle front row ) and Saskatoon’s Caden Snow (third from right back row) won gold in the inaugural mixed curling event

The results of last week’s Saskatchewan Winter Games prove there’s no shortage of high-level curling talent in our region.

Team Lakeland, with Gavin Martens, Tyler Derksen, Logan Sawicki and Jared Tessier took the Male Curling title.

Team Prairie Central, which included Kylie Willms of Dundurn, captured the gold medal in the Female Curling event.

The majority of the Lakeland Male curling team had a good warm-up for the Winter Games after representing Saskatchewan in the U18 Curling Nationals in Timmins, Ontario earlier in the month. That team was skipped by Tyler’s brother Dylan.

Dylan would have been skipping the team at the  Saskatchewan Games except he was gearing up to represent Saskatchewan, along with his cousin Melissa Remeshylo, in the inaugural Mixed Curling at the Canada Winter Games.

Now that is a talented family.

Sawicki stepped up from his third position to skip the team.

Cara Kesserling and Caden Snow became the first pair to win Mixed Curling as the sport was being introduced at this edition of the Games.

Kesserling also had a warm-up at the U18 Nationals. She skipped her team as the reigning U18 provincial champion.

Kesserling had some experience in the past curling mixed doubles with a high school friend, and also with her father.

The Kesserling/Snow duo were a relatively new team,  having begun curling together just three weeks ago.
