The 1,500 athletes competing at the Saskatchewan Winter Games last week in Regina gave the performance of their lives, while making memories that will last a lifetime.
The event marked the triumphant return of the Games after a five year absence due to the pandemic. The last Games had been held in North Battleford in 2018.
Saskatoon topped the medal count with 98 medals (41 gold, 30 silver, 27 bronze).
Regina was second with 69 medals (24 gold, 21 silver, 24 bronze).
Prairie Central (which includes the region around Saskatoon) had a strong showing, earning more gold medals than Regina and finishing in third place in total medals with 51 (26 gold, 14 silver, 16 bronze).
Lakeland (which includes Hague, Rosthern and Waldheim), finished in sixth place with 34 medals (6 gold, 17 silver, 11 bronze).
One of Lakeland’s gold medals was won by the male curling team that included Hague’s Tyler Derksen and Rosthern’s Gavin Martens.
Derksen was chosen to carry the banner for Team Lakeland at the Winter Games. He said it meant a lot to the athletes.
“It was nice to play against teams that we haven’t seen before.” said Derksen. “It was definitely a great experience being part of a large team, being able to stay in dorms, and socialize with players from different sports.”
