The City of Warman is putting temporary safety measures in place at the intersection of Clubhouse Boulevard and 1st Avenue North at the beginning of the school year.
The intersection occasionally sees traffic bottlenecks when parents drop off and pick up students at Holy Trinity and Traditions Elementary Schools, particularly at the beginning of the school year and on days when school buses are not running.
Warman City Council adopted a motion at its August 23 meeting to have civic bylaw personnel present at the intersection at peak periods in the morning and afternoon to ensure pedestrians are able to cross the busy thoroughfare.
The safety officers will be on hand for one-hour periods: 45 minutes prior to the morning bell and 15 minutes after the morning bell. They will also be available for the same period in the afternoon.
The city personnel will be there to provide some order for groups crossing the street, and to help educate students on how to stay safe.
Warman RCMP Staff Sergeant Barry Thomas has indicated the detachment will provide officers to assist at the intersection during peak periods as well.
The city will also be providing information to residents about parking, student drop-offs and pickups, and alternate routes to mitigate traffic congestion during peak times.
Construction is currently underway by the developer of the Heritage neighbourhood on an extension to Augusta Boulevard.
This extension, which would connect 1st Avenue North with Centennial Boulevard, is expected to be ready for traffic later this fall. However, it will not be finished prior to the start of the school year.
