The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed May 17 to 23 as Treaties Recognition Week, highlighting the importance of treaties in the province.
Treaties are foundational agreements between the Crown and First Nations that shape the rights, responsibilities and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples across Saskatchewan. There are six treaties and one significant treaty adhesion in the province.
“Treaties are our shared history and remain important to the relationships we continue to build today,” Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Eric Schmalz said. “Treaties Recognition Week is an opportunity to reflect on those responsibilities, learn more about our shared commitments and support greater understanding among all people in Saskatchewan.”
This year will mark 150 years since the signing of Treaty 6; Treaty 4 reached the same milestone in 2024. Recognizing these anniversaries provides residents with an opportunity to learn more about treaties, including the history of how they were signed and the important role they continue to play for all Saskatchewan residents.
