More than 2,500 people from all over central Saskatchewan were in attendance at the mamowintowin (“Coming Together” in Cree) Traditional Pow Wow hosted at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Tuesday, June 3.
According to information provided by the Prairie Spirit School Division (PSSD), the event was meant to celebrate student achievement and mark the beginning of Indigenous People’s Month.
The PSSD helped to host the pow wow and a number of students from local schools were part of the audience.
There were also attendees from the Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, One Arrow First Nation, Mistawasis Nêhiyawak, St. Francis Cree Bilingual School (Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools), and the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan.
The Pow Wow was opened by Elders Dolores Sand and Marylyne Parenteau, who celebrated Treaty relationships and the achievements of all graduates from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Over 150 dancers and eight drum groups performed during the event, which was MC’ed by Sanford Strongarm.
Over lunch, the Creeland dancers showcased Métis Jigging with the Red River Jig and the Orange Blossom Special.
Chief Felix Thomas of Kinistin Saulteaux Nation recognized the event as a significant step forward towards Reconciliation.
