For the first time in many years the Warman High Wolverines boys came out on top of their home  tournament.

It was squeaking shoes and non-stop action as Warman High hosted the two day 2023 WHS Sr. Boys Invitational Tournament on December 8-9.

The province was well represented as Warman, Clavet, North Battleford John Paul II, Estevan, Meadow Lake, Swift Current, Weyburn and Balgonie kept the fans on the edge of their seats in a series of highly competitive games.

Warman’s aggressive defence and skilled offence proved too much for the competition.

Warman opened the tournament with a 76-63 win over Clavet. They advanced to the championship game with a dominant win over Estevan.

In the final they faced a tougher challenge against Swift Current.

The Wolverines established a 20-13 first quarter lead on the strength of a series of baskets by Kam Vandermey.

In quarter two the home squad increased their lead to  35-22 as Dallas Pauls and Quincy Powell each scored six points and Vandermey finished the frame with a two pointer and a free throw.

Swift Current attempted a comeback in the second half, pulling to within nine points before Warman took over the game and came away with a 62-46 win.

Rylan Dyck had the hot hand, scoring 10 points in the latter part of the game.

Warman coach Russell Dyck felt rebounding was one of the team’s strength.

“We are strong and have size under the basket. We rebound really well,” he said.

The team will look to build on this success in the upcoming season.
