Eight members of the Corman Park Police Service (CPPS) (one absent) were presented with MADD Canada’s Van de Vorst Family Award November 15, 2023, at the Saskatoon Inn. The award recognizes outstanding work in taking impaired drivers off public highways and RM roads. These officers were responsible for removing 264 impaired drivers in a 12 month period.
The award is named in memory of Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst and their two children, Kamryn and Miguire, who were killed by an impaired driver in a collision near Saskatoon in 2016.
Incidents of note:
On November 8 at 6:10 p.m. CPPS observed a white Audi SQ5 driving 163 km/h in a 110 km/h zone, northbound on Highway 11 near Township Road (TWP) 382. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified. The accused had red eyes and admitted to consuming alcohol. He provided a sample of his breath into the approved screening device resulting in “FAIL”, was arrested, transported to Martensville RCMP where he provided two samples of his breath resulting in 160 mgs% + 180 mgs%. On November 10 and 1:27 p.m., CPPS conducted traffic stop on a black 2018 Nissan Rogue at Highway 16 and Range Road (RR) 3062 for a speeding offence. The driver produced a class 7 driver’s license (DL), and the officer observed the smell of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. There was open liquor observed in vehicle. An ASD demand was made, a breath sample was provided, resulting in FAIL. The driver was arrested for impaired driving, taken to Martensville RCMP detachment where two samples were provided resulting in 80 and 70 mgs. The driver was issued a 60 day suspension in accordance with the law regarding a new driver consuming alcohol, as well as a seven day impoundment for having passengers 15 and under.
On November 10 at 9:25 p.m. CPPS performed a traffic stop on Highway 219 near Cartwright Street where the driver was found to have outstanding warrants. While interacting with the driver, signs of drug impairment were observed, and the driver admitted to recreational drug use and advised they were on a significant amount of cold medication. He was given a Standard Field Sobriety Test which he performed poorly at. The driver was subsequently given a 60-day driver’s license suspension and 30-day vehicle impoundment. The driver was also released on their outstanding warrants for a future court date.
On November 12 at 7:52 p.m., CPPS observed a person they knew to have outstanding warrants of arrest. CPPS members engaged the subject and after a brief struggle, the individual was brought into custody. The individual was subsequently released to attend court in Saskatoon on her outstanding warrant as well as new charges of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
On November 15 at 2:39 a.m, CPPS received a call from the Saskatoon Fire Department regarding a fire located at Saskatoon Woodchips and Landscape Supplies located on TWP 354 near Highway 219. Saskatoon Fire was on scene attempting to put out the pile of trees on fire. There was no evident cause, and the matter is still under investigation. The property owner was advised and had his employees use loaders to help stop the spread of the fire.
On November 14, around 10:15 p.m., CPPS conducted a traffic stop for a speed of 113 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. The driver was identified and admitted to consuming wine, had a smell of beverage alcohol, and was slurring her words when communicating. She provided a sufficient sample of breath that resulted in a reading of a FAIL, was arrested and then transported to Martensville RCMP detachment where she provided two sufficient samples of breath with results of 100 mg%. The accused was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and exceeding 80 mg% of alcohol.
On November 17 at 12:16 a.m., a CPPS officer came across an intoxicated male walking the wrong way north bound towards the Highway 11/12 junction. The subject was cooperative and advised he was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamines and was subsequently placed under arrest for his own safety. He was transported to the Saskatoon RCMP Detachment where he was booked into cells to be released once sober.
