The Legends Centre saw some exciting ringette action on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13.
On Saturday it was the best players in the Prairies squaring off as Saskatchewan Heat, Edmonton Wham, Calgary Rath and the Manitoba Herd battled in National Ringette League action.
Sunday saw younger athletes enjoy fast paced and fun filled games that saw the Warman Avalanches and Warman Storm both come away with wins, although the U10 games didn’t post goals on the scoreclock. Another way to emphasize participation.
Warman Ringette operates under the umbrella of the Saskatoon Ringette. Involvement in the sport started in 2015-2016 season with a U9 team and in the current season there are Warman teams in U10 Fun1, U10Fun2, U10 Fun3, U12 and U14 divisions as well as learn to play programs for younger ages.
While the equipment is similiar and there are six players on the ice at a time like hockey, this game is much different. It takes elements from soccer, basketball and lacrosse to provide an exciting sport with unique rules that promote sportsmanship and team play.
No intentional body contact is allowed and a player must pass the ring over the blue line before being allowed to contact the ring again.
A line at the top of the defensive circles provide a barrier for only three players on each team to enter.
Similiar to box lacrosse there is a circular crease around the net that no skater can enter. A violation of this results in losing possession of the ring.
Emphasis is on participation and skill development and the fast paced, keep it moving aspect of the game is very exciting. It’s easy to see why this sport continues to grow.
