Jordan Normand was stopped by Prince Albert goalie Jayden Kraus on this second period scoring attempt. The Wildcat forward did score a big goal midway through the third period to make the score 4-2

It was a ‘win one, lose one’ scenario as the U18AAA Warman Wildcats hosted a pair of games at the Legends Centre in Warman last weekend.

On Friday February 4 the Prince Albert Mintos brought their A-game as they battled the league-leading Wildcats. In a scoreless first period Prince Albert outshot the Wildcats 15-9. They had a well-earned two goal lead early in the second period on a pair of goals by Ashton Tait.

Prince Albert were a bit too aggressive, resulting in Jacob Cossette taking a four minute head contact penalty. That penalty was the real turning point in the game. For one thing Cossette is the league’s leading scorer, so it took his offensive skills out of the game. The Wildcats showed real discipline in not retaliating to the hit but instead made the opponent pay on the score sheet.

Wildcat captain Brody Mortensen hit the twine early in the man advantage. 30 seconds later Rhett Dekowny gained control of the puck in front of the Mintos net. He quickly spun around for a quick shot and was able to tap his own rebound through the five hole of goalie Jayden Kraus to tie the game.

Special teams continued to play a big role as Mason Bueckert seized the lead with a short-handed goal with twenty seconds left in the period.

Goaltender Alex Worthington’s spectacular saves in the third period helped preserved the lead. Mid-period Jordan Normand scored to give Warman a little breathing room. Rhett Deknowy sealed the deal with an unassisted empty net goal late in the game as the Wildcats celebrated a 5-2 come-from-behind win for their seventh victory in a row.

On Saturday, February 5 the visiting Notre Dame Hounds got off to a 3-0 lead on goals by Ben Acoin, Remi Lapalme and Van Eger. On this night the comeback magic was not there for the Wildcats as Hounds goalie Wilson Mayfield made 31 saves in the shutout win.

Warman still sits atop the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League standings with 59 points, four points ahead of Notre Dame and five points ahead of the Saskatoon Blazers.

Every game is important and the Wildcats will be looking to start another win streak with a trio of road games in Southern Saskatchewan against Notre Dame on Saturday, February 12, Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday, February 13 and the Regina Pat Canadians on Tuesday, February 15.
