The overall value of construction projects in Corman Park, Warman and Martensville for the first nine months of 2021 is up over last year.

“It’s been a busy year so far,” said Corman Park Director of Planning and Development Rebecca Row. “We’re seeing the most activity since 2018, which was a record year.”

In a report to the Corman Park council meeting October 25, Row said both the number of building permits and the overall value of the projects is higher than last year.

In the period between January 1 and September 30, 2021, Corman Park issued 228 building permits, a 45 per cent increase over the same period in 2020, when 157 permits were issued.

But the big jump was a 116 per cent increase in the value of construction; from $34,634,573 in 2020 to $74,823,700 in 2021.

The highest-value agricultural construction project in the RM of Corman Park so far this year is a $250,000 intensive livestock operation barn addition. Other projects currently underway include: a $1.7 million fertilizer processing facility; a $2 million renovation underway at a residence, and a $1 million addition and renovation to the historic kitchen at the Beaver Creek camp.

The City of Warman has also seen a rise in the value of construction over the first nine months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.

A report to the October 18 Warman City Council committee of the whole meeting  from the city’s planning and development department indicated the value of building permits issued between January 1 and October 6, 2021, was $31,224,419. That’s over $10 million more than the $21,000,491 recorded for the same period a year earlier.

However, the number of building permits issued so far this year is actually less than last year. So far, the city has issued 231 building permits, while last year there were 243 over the same period.

“Overall value of permits is up from last year,” stated the report to the October 18 council meeting. “The overall number of permits is slightly down and this is only as a result of the number of smaller renovations, decks and garages as well as commercial renovations being down this year.

“Residential permits are up, mainly as a result of some of the developers building out and completing townhouse sites already under construction. Overall value continues to beat last year based on the scale of projects.”

The City of Martensville is also seeing increased activity in construction projects this year.

According to statistics posted on the city’s website, the total value of construction from the beginning of January to the end of September, 2021, was $16,947,567.42. A total of 167 building permits have been issued during that period.

During the entire 12 months of 2020, Martensville issued 244 permits worth a combined value of $12,214,951.
