Recent incidents of vandalism, stunting, littering and other illegal activities in the Northridge Centennial Community Centre (NRCCC) parking lot is prompting the City of Martensville to look at upgrading its security cameras in the area.
At a Martensville City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 7, a report from the city’s recreation and community services department indicated the current security camera system does not have the necessary resolution needed for police to positively identify suspects.
Council adopted a resolution directing city administration to provide price quotes on suitable equipment from a variety of vendors. When the price quotes are brought before council at a future meeting, a decision will be made at that time on whether to install the upgrade.
The current security camera system at the NRCCC parking lot and adjacent Kyle Syrenne Skate Park were installed as part of the city’s 2020 capital investment plan.
In the recreation department’s report to the September 7 council meeting, it was noted that several complaints of recent illegal activities have come forward. These complaints were handed over to the RCMP for investigation.
Footage provided from the existing security cameras was determined to be difficult to search. It was also found to be of inadequate visual resolution.
City administration is recommending three high-definition cameras capable of identifying license plate numbers, a high-definition video recorder with added storage, and remote view capability be installed to replace the existing system at the NRCCC parking lot. The new equipment would have the capability to provide information to the RCMP that can be used to provide better enforcement.
The existing NRCCC camera system would then be relocated to the newly-built pump track near the skate park.
