The number and value of building permits in Martensville and Warman during the first two months of 2021 shows a sharp increase from the same period a year ago.

From January 1 to March 2, 2021, the City of Warman issued 30 building permits worth a total value of $3,758,000, according to the city’s planning and development department. This compares to 33 building permits valued at $1,091,300 issued during the same period in 2020.

A report tabled at the City of Warman council’s committee of the whole meeting March 15 noted that four new commercial building starts account for $2,029,000; almost half the total value of all permits.

One of the largest of those commercial projects is a Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy on Centennial Boulevard across from the Legends Centre. The building site is fenced off and construction is slated to begin shortly.

The report also lists permits issued for six new single-family dwellings and a two-unit multi-family dwelling worth a combined total of $1,268,800. There are 20 permits for renovations and additions worth $460,200.

As good as those numbers are, they’re even better in Martensville.

From January 1 to March 1, 2021, Martensville issued 39 building permits worth a combined value of $3,771,400, according to figures posted on the city’s website.

The permits issued so far this year include four commercial-industrial buildings, three single-family homes and 10 multi-family dwellings. There were also 11 residential renovations and additions.

During the same period in 2020, Martensville issued 37 permits worth a combined total of $1,584,203.

The biggest jump this year is the almost $2.5 million for the semi-detached dwellings on Echo Lane, near Lake Vista and École Holy Mary Schools in the Lake Vista neighbourhood.

New building permit numbers for the first quarter of 2021, which includes the period from January 1 to March 31, will be available in early April.
