Great Plains College, Warman Campus, will be offering a Youth Care Worker diploma program, starting in the fall of 2021.

The college live streamed the announcement and launch of the program on their Facebook page, on December 4.

The Youth Care Worker diploma builds on the knowledge and information provided within the one-year certificate program that is currently offered.

Students will increase their knowledge of agency administration and community development, conflict resolution and small group facilitation, conflict diversity and family systems, sexual victimization, therapeutic intervention strategies and will also be able to receive hands-on experience by participating in two extended work-based practicums.

“I’m thrilled that the Warman Campus will be expanding our program menu to include the Youth Care Worker diploma option in order to serve the needs of the current labour market and our region,” said Great Plains College, Warman Campus region manager Jill Jenkins, “We are proud that our campus will be the only provincial institution offering this diploma program in a face-to-face learning environment in 2021, within the parameters of COVID-19 restrictions.”

Warman Mayor Gary Philipchuk spoke at the virtual event. During his speech, Philipchuk mentioned that he is familiar with what Great Plains has to offer, which he experienced first hand when he was vice-principal at Warman High School.

“The City of Warman values our partners in advanced education because the entire community benefits from the programs that are delivered,” said Philipchuk.

Philipchuk is glad to see the college expand an existing program which will lead to more opportunities for the students.

“We support Great Plains College’s dedication to building effective leaders and career opportunities,” he said. “By expanding the one-year Youth Care Worker certificate program to a two year diploma option, Great Plains College is widening the opportunity for success for its students, as well as improving the future of our community with well trained professionals.”

Great Plains College President and CEO David Keast also spoke during the program launch event. He believes there is a need for youth care workers and he is glad the Warman Campus has added this diploma program to its selection of courses.

“Given the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for trained care workers and specialists in children and youth care is accentuated and it is becoming somewhat urgent,” said Keast.

Applications for September 2021 entry are currently being accepted for both the Youth Care Worker certificate and diploma programs.

“This program is partnered and brokered through Saskatchewan Polytechnic, giving students the same credentials and curriculum they would receive at a Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus,” said Jenkins.

Anyone who applies to the Youth Care Worker certificate or diploma program before April 30, 2021, is automatically considered for an entrance scholarship between $500-$5,000. Grade 11 students who apply before June 30, 2021 will also be eligible for an additional early entrance award of $1,000.
