Volunteer firefighters from Dalmeny, Osler, Martensville and Langham are now in their fourth day of battling a wildfire east of Dalmeny.
Strong winds, dry conditions and difficult terrain are making things difficult, but firefighters are able to keep it under control, according to Dalmeny Fire and Rescue Lieutenant Joanne Elder.
The fire began Thursday afternoon, October 8 as a result of an apparent spark from a CN Rail crew working on the line ignited dry brush near the track. The fire quickly spread as high winds fanned the flames, putting several acreages at risk.
In an interview on Sunday, October 11 at about 1:15 pm, Elder said fire crews have been on scene since Thursday afternoon. Warman Fire Rescue and Hepburn Fire Department also contributed personnel and resources.
She noted that in addition to the fire departments still on scene, CN Rail officials, RCMP and Corman Park Police have assisted with traffic control and ensuring area residents are safe. Several residents on acreages threatened by the fire were evacuated from their homes on Thursday night, but have since been able to return.
Elder said despite the strong winds Sunday afternoon which are causing flare-ups, fire crews now have the necessary resources to keep it under control.
She said so far, two sheds and two storage containers were lost to the fire. However, no homes were damaged and there are no reported injuries.
Firefighters expect the fire will have to be continually monitored overnight into Monday morning due to ongoing high winds.
