Smoke from the grass fire east of Dalmeny was seen from Warman

A grass fire east of Range Road 3061 and south of Power Line Road (Township 392) proved to be a tough battle for firefighters because of the terrain in the area which included a lot of brush and bushes.

Dalmeny Fire Rescue responded to the call around 2:15 p.m. on October 8 and requested mutual aid shortly after arriving on scene.

According to Dalmeny Fire Rescue public relations coordinator and Lieutenant Joanne Elder, the cause of the fire was from a spark when crews were working on the rail road tracks near by.

A plume of thick smoke could be seen for many kilometers as the firefighters attempted to put the fire out and prevent it from spreading.

Elder said the fire was contained around midnight and firefighters worked all night and in to the morning of October 9 to monitor and put out any additional hot spots.

Several acreage homes in the area were a threat to the fire and evacuations were required for all residents.

Even though none of the homes were damaged, Elder said a coverall structure was destroyed by the fire.

Once the fire wasn’t a threat anymore, Elder said that people were able to return to their homes.

One of the challenges for the firefighters was the terrain and Elder said that it was difficult to get to certain areas to put a stop to the fire.

Once the fire was contained and not a threat anymore, Elder added that they still had to monitor the area and put out any flare-ups that occurred.

Elder also mentioned that this grass fire proved to be the most challenging one this year for Dalmeny Fire Rescue because of the certain areas that were hard to get to.

Fire departments from Dalmeny, Martensville, Warman, Osler, Langham, Hepburn and Saskatoon provided mutual aid and Elder was very appreciative of the help and support they provided.

Firefighters were still on scene October 9, dealing with additional flare-ups, making sure that there was no additional threat, before clearing the scene.
