Baseball games in Martensville will be played under the lights once provincial COVID-19 health restrictions on the sport are lifted.
Installation of lights on one of the Senior-U18 baseball diamonds in the city’s northeastern neighbourhood was given approval by Martensville City Council at a video-conference meeting on Tuesday, June 2.
The ball diamond lights will cost $200,000 to install and the project should be completed by the end of June, 2020.
The installation of the lights is one of six capital projects earmarked by Martensville City Council to be completed this year. One other capital project will be started this year but finished in 2021.
The projects are funded under a grant from the recently-announced provincial Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP). Martensville will receive almost $1.4 million in MEEP funding.
The other projects scheduled to be completed this summer include:
* paving approximately 1000 meters of Kinsmen Park pathway at a cost of $140,000;
* paving the outdoor rink at the Martensville Sports Centre for year-round use at a cost of $80,000;
* Construction of a BMX pump track in Kinsmen Park at a cost of $150,000;
* paving the south parking lot at the Martensville Sports Centre at a cost of $50,000;
* Purchase of two all-purpose Gator vehicles for parks worker transportation at a cost of $20,000.
One other project, which will begin construction this year but won’t be completed until next summer, is a fully-serviced RV campground at a cost of $750,000.
The capital projects have all been identified as high priority under the city’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and are in line with the goals and vision in the city’s Official Community Plan.
The provincial funding allows the city to move up the timeline for construction of the projects.
