More land will likely be dedicated to urban residential neighbourhoods and less to commercial and industrial uses when the City of Martensville begins development on the west side of Highway 12.
A proposed amendment to the city’s West Sector Plan was endorsed by Martensville City Council at a video-conference meeting on Tuesday, May 5.
The West Sector Plan, which spells out long-term future development plans for about 240 acres of recently-annexed land between Highway 12 and Range Road 3055, is currently being finalized. The area is expected to eventually house about 13,000 people.
However, there is no time line for development. It will depend on market conditions and growth rates in the region.
While the West Sector Plan amendment was endorsed by Martensville City Council, it still needs to be approved by the neighbouring municipalities of Corman Park, Saskatoon, Warman and Osler as part of the Partnership for Growth (P4G) regional planning process.
The other councils’ endorsements are needed in order to update the P4G Regional Land Use Map (RLUM) and incorporate the changes into the P4G District Official Community Plan (OCP).
Martensville council also endorsed an amendment to the P4G Regional Plan to accommodate a country residential development called Eagle Ridge in the RM of Corman Park west of Saskatoon.
Martensville City Councillor Bob Blackwell, a member of the P4G Regional Oversight Committee (ROC), said he’s impressed with the willingness of P4G member municipalities to work together.
The ROC is made up of elected representatives from each municipal council.
“I’ve been on this committee for over six years, and it’s refreshing to see the cooperation toward a common goal,” said Blackwell. “These two amendments to the land use map went smoothly.
“All the concerns raised were dealt with and resolved.”
Martensville Mayor Kent Muench agreed the regional planning process has made progress over the last several years as municipalities plan for growth in a regional context.
