The Rosthern Wheatkings punched their ticket to the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL) championship series with a decisive 7-3 win over the visiting Clavet Cougars on Friday February 27.

The win marked a three-game sweep of the series for the Wheatkings, coming on the heels of a 5-1 victory on February 20 and a 5-2 win on February 22.

In a social media post following Game 3 of the series, the Wheatkings team expressed thanks to their fans for “packing the barn and bringing the energy every single game. We couldn’t do it without you! We are finals bound…let’s keep this ride rolling.”

The Wheatkings are now gearing up for what will prove to be a tough showdown against the Shellbrook Elks. The Elks downed the Allan Flames in the other TRHL semi-final series. After dropping a 4-3 decision to Allan in overtime during the first game of the series, the Elks came back to win three straight by scores of 6-3, 9-6 and 6-3.

While the Wheatkings have not yet won the TRHL championship, it’s not for lack of trying. They’ve been to the finals five times since the league began in 2016-17. Rosthern lost to St. Louis in 2017, to Birch Hills in 2018, to Warman in 2019, and to Birch Hills in 2024.

The opening game of the best-of-five championship series is March 13 in Rosthern at 8:00 p.m. Scores are posted online at the Twin Rivers Hockey League website (www.twinrivershockeyleague.com).
