The Warman Wolverines managed to halt their losing streak with a 4-3 nailbiter of a victory over the Battlefords North Stars at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Saturday, October 18.
Prior to this weekend, the Wolverines’ last win had been a 6-5 overtime victory against the Kindersley Klippers on September 26. They then lost against Kindersley the following night at home, and then suffered a pair of losses against Flin Flon.
On Tuesday, October 14, the Wolverines took another tough 5-2 loss against the La Ronge Ice Wolves on the road.
Warman and La Ronge had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period, but the Ice Wolves ran away with the game in the last two periods, scoring twice in the second and twice in the third to claim victory.
Kayden Yeaman and Néka Jean scored for Warman, with Bexson Fox, Pherson Loehndorf and Brodie Scopick providing assists.
The Wolverines then faced off with the North Stars at the Communiplex on Friday, October 17. Warman had previously faced the Battlefords team on September 23 and suffered a 5-2 loss.
Unfortunately, Friday’s match-up ended much the same way, with the North Stars jumping out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period and adding five more goals throughout the rest of the game to win 8-2.
Loehndorf and Carter Bergen scored for Warman, while Oliver Nottingham, Mason Moreland and Hudson Kerr added assists.
Then came Saturday’s home game. Warman eked out a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal by Riley Rich-Holden, assisted by Kason Kerbes and Peyton Allard.
The North Stars tied up the score in the second period, but the third period saw the two teams trading goals to tie up the game at 3-3. Kane Kennedy scored Warman’s second goal, while Rich-Holden notched their third with just 54 seconds on the clock.
Nottingham, Cam Sarna, and Loehndorf provided assists. In a shootout, Nottingham then notched the only goal to give the Wolverines their much-needed 4-3 victory.
The Wolverines are next set to host the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday, October 25 at the Communiplex. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
They will also play an away game with Kindersley on Tuesday, October 28.
