The Warman U18AAA Wildcats hosted the Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers for a pair of games over the weekend. Warman channelled the harsh weather outside en route to two thrashings on the ice, as they beat the Maulers 8-3 on Saturday, December 7 and 11-0 on Sunday, December 8.
The Wildcats opened the weekend on their back feet, as Yorkton’s Layne McKechnie found the back of the net five and half minutes into Saturday’s contest. Warman quickly responded with three goals of their own. Declan Borthwick, Kaleb Dewar, and Trey Markus all scored before the buzzer sounded to put the Wildcats up 3-1 after one frame.
Warman’s momentum continued into the second. Cameron Jacobson scored less than three minutes into the period, followed shortly by a Trey Markus power play goal. Yorkton stopped the bleeding momentarily, scoring 52 seconds later. Two more Wildcat goals from Mason Obrigewitch and Dewar kept Warman out in front 7-2 after 40 minutes of play.
The third period was less prolific on the scoring front, with each side notching one point. Jack Lavalee scored Warman’s lone goal of the period, with Borthwick and Markus picking up assists as the Wildcats claimed an 8-3 victory.
The Wildcats weren’t content with their eight-goal outing the night before and scored an incredible 11 goals against the Maulers on Sunday. Four of their scores came in the opening period, as Hudson Brehaut, Calder Hamilton, Jack Lavallee, and Cameron Jacobson each found nylon. 21 of Warman’s 49 shots for the game came in the first 20 minutes, after which they led Yorkton 4-0.
Warman continued to lay the hammer down, giving Yorkton zero room to breathe. Kaleb Dewar and Koston Baliski both scored in the second period for the Wildcats, while the Maulers continued to strike out on the scoresheet.
The red light lit five more times for the Wildcats in the third and final period as Warman blew out Yorkton 11-0. Goaltender Seth Gutenberg earned the shutout, stopping 29 attempts. Hudson Brehaut led the way on the stat sheet, scoring two goals and helping on another four on Sunday. Kaleb Dewar scored a weekend-high four goals for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will head south on Friday, December 13 for a double-header against the Regina Pat Canadians.
