The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to cut the PST from grocery items, restaurant meals and children’s clothes after the federal government announced it would be doing the same.

“Saskatchewan can join the federal government in cutting sales taxes to make life more affordable,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Tax relief is the most effective way to help families make ends meet.”

The federal government announced it will remove the GST for two months on numerous items, such as: children’s clothes, toys, diapers and car seats, as well as Christmas trees, beer, wine and cider, restaurant meals and prepared groceries.

The Saskatchewan government hiked the PST from five to six per cent in 2017 and stuck it on children’s clothes, restaurant meals and snack foods.

A Saskatchewan family making $75,000 per year is paying $2,024 in PST this year. That’s almost $300 more than in 2017.

The Saskatchewan NDP pushed for a similar tax cut to save families money during the last election.

“Not having to pay PST or GST on these items during the expensive holiday season would be a relief for Saskatchewanians,” Haubrich said. “It’s time for Moe to step up and cut the PST to show he won’t be outdone by the feds on sales tax affordability.”
