A 67-year-old woman from the Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation is set to appear in Rosthern court on Wednesday, June 17 on charges relating to the death of a child.

According to an RCMP news release, Rosthern RCMP responded to a report of a child in medical distress at a residence on the Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation on May 10. EMS also attended and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, deceased at the scene.

Further investigation and consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service determined the child’s death was suspicious in nature. The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) then took carriage of the investigation.

A 67-year-old female was arrested on June 10 and is now facing charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failure to provide the necessaries of life and abandoning a child. She made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 11.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Team, Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, and Prince Albert and Battlefords Serious Crimes Units assisted with this investigation.
