The Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA) and the Saskatoon & Area Branch of the National Association of Federal Retirees are holding a Saskatchewan Provincial Election Town Hall this fall on issues of concern to older adults and their families.
The forum is slated for Monday, September 16 at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon. Event details are available on the SCOA website.
“Since 1991, the Saskatoon Council on Aging has been supporting and advocating for the older adults in Saskatoon and surrounding areas,” said SCOA Chair Sharon Dixon. “We are eager to hear the perspectives of these political parties in Saskatchewan as the population of our senior residents is steadily growing.”
The seven registered Saskatchewan political parties invited to participate are the Saskatchewan Party, the Buffalo Party of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Green Party, the New Democratic Party, the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan United Party, and the Saskatchewan Progress Party.
According to event organizers, the intent is to learn more about the registered parties’ views on age-friendly communities, standards for long-term care homes, financial policies and workplace strategies for older adults and the establishment of an independent seniors advocate in Saskatchewan.
The moderator for the town hall meeting will be Ken Pontikes, former Director of Planning and Development for the City of Saskatoon and former Deputy Minister of Municipal Government in Saskatchewan. Each registered political party will have five minutes for opening comments followed by a moderated question and answer period.
Representatives of the political parties will be invited to be available to participants and the news media during the networking session after the formal Town Hall.
Town Hall invitees include the members (close to 5,000) of both organizers of the Town Hall, hundreds of other organizations in Saskatoon, and the public.
