Norm Hiebert and Barb Cousins were honoured by the citizens of Radisson and area recently for their many years of volunteering and contributing to the betterment of their community.

The couple were presented with the Radisson ‘Citizen of the Year’ award by  Radisson Recreation Association President Linda Hosegood at ceremony on May 2.

In  her presentation, Hosegood said the couple received the award for their outstanding role as curators and stewards of Radisson’s collective history through the ‘Zion Museum’.

“Their work in the museum is an exceptional asset, not just to Radisson, but to the province,” said Hosegood. “They give their summers from May through September, opening to the public every weekend and every Wednesday. They don’t charge admission. They don’t receive grants to cover their costs. It is an out-of-pocket expense for the community to enjoy.

“They have spent countless hours organizing the museum, and spend time with many people who come to visit the museum.”
The couple also volunteer with the “Beautify Radisson Committee” by caring for flowers in pots and planters on Main Street. They started the town’s annual ‘Show and Shine’ event 25 years ago, and it is among the best-attended events of its kind in the province.

“The example this couple have presented, through their time and effort, is a true reference of ‘volunteering’,” said Hosegood. “They are ambassadors of our town and district, leading our community forward to grow and thrive.”
