The cause of a fire which destroyed a home on 5th Street South in Martensville on Tuesday, December 12 has been deemed to be accidental. Martensville Fire Chief Kurt Dyck confirmed on Tuesday, December 19 that the blaze appeared to be started as a result of improper disposal of smoking material at the rear of the house. In an interview at the scene December 12, Martensville Fire Department Captain Bill Symons said when the first crews arrived, they discovered the exterior rear and side of the home was burning rapidly, with flames shooting across the roof in the attic space. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but the family lost all their belongings. A ‘GoFundMe’ page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/gpet27-family-house-fire) has been set up to assist them. A separate fire earlier in the morning of December 12 at a commercial business on Centennial Drive South in Martensville is still deemed to be suspicious in nature and police are asking that anyone with information on that incident contact the RCMP at 310-RCMP.
