A 30-year-old pregnant woman from Warman was killed in a tragic head-on collision on Highway 12 south of Martensville on Saturday, April 9.
The collision between a northbound Toyota and a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 12 at about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection with Lutheran Road (Township Road 382).
The woman who died was the driver of the Toyota. A female passenger in the same vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The male driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV was transported to hospital with critical injuries.
Police are not releasing the name of the woman who was killed.
According to Warman RCMP Staff Sergeant Barry Thomas, the collision is currently under investigation.
Martensville-Warman RCMP, Martensville Fire Department and Corman Park Police responded to the crash. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as RCMP forensic collision reconstructionists were on scene.
Thomas said an RCMP officer on patrol had earlier observed the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV being driven erratically southbound on Highway 12.
The RCMP officer engaged their emergency lights to stop the Jeep, which kept driving at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the Jeep and continued to drive southbound in the direction it was headed.
The officer then located the Jeep after it had collided with the Toyota. The Jeep had been going the wrong direction in the northbound lanes.
RCMP say the driver of the Toyota, a 30-year-old woman from Warman, was declared deceased at the scene. Her female passenger was taken to hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
The driver of the Jeep was hospitalized with critical, life-threatening injuries. Police do not have an update on his condition, but he remains in hospital. The identity of the driver of the Jeep is still under investigation.
Thomas said the investigation is complicated, and it could be some time before charges are laid.
He confirmed the woman’s death is even more tragic because of her pregnant condition.
“As far as I’m concerned, two people died in that crash,” Thomas said.
