Martensville City Council voted at its meeting on Tuesday, March 15 to approve the installation of ten recycling stations in partnership with Creative Outdoor Advertising (COA) .

The initiative  could potentially net the city between $1,400 and $4,000 in revenue annually,

The recycling stations, which include receptacles for waste, paper and beverage containers, would feature advertising of local businesses as well as the city’s logo.

The city would receive a portion of the advertising revenue. The amount would be dependent on whether the city or COA performs the collection of waste and recycling.

The recycling stations would be installed by COA at locations approved by city council. The company would also clean, repair and maintain the units and the immediate area around them.

There would not be any financial cost to the city for the program.

Currently, city public works crews collect waste and recycling at city-owned receptacles. Schaeffer told city council at the March 8 meeting that if the proposal is approved, city staff would have the capacity to include collection at any additional sites.

The company has a similar program in operation in the City of Saskatoon, as well as many other municipalities across Canada.

ASSESSMENT EXTENSION

Martensville City Council  passed a bylaw at the March 15 meeting to extend the deadline for preparation of the city’s assessment roll from April 1, 2022 to April 29, 2022.

Martensville Corporate Services Director Leah Bloomquist explained to council at the meeting that the extension is needed because the city sends out assessment and tax notices to residents and businesses at the same time. The notices are sent after the provincial budget is unveiled and education mill rates are set by the province.

This is the third consecutive year the city has issued assessment and tax notices at the same time, a strategy aimed at reducing confusion for ratepayers, said Bloomquist.

She said the city administration requires additional time following the release of the provincial budget to process and mail the notices. The extension is allowed under the provisions of the provincial Cities Act.

WATERSHED STEWARDS

The City of Martensville has renewed its annual membership in the South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards Incorporated (SSRWSI), a non-profit organization pledged to protecting “the beautify, diversity and integrity” of the watershed.

Martensville City Council agreed at the March 15 meeting to renew the municipality’s membership in the group. The City of Martensville has been a member of the SSRWSI for the past decade. The RM of Corman Park, RM of Rosthern, Town of Osler and City of Saskatoon are also members of the organization.
