Premier Scott Moe joined dignitaries, Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans and public servants for the annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service on Wednesday morning, November 3, paying tribute to those who have served and those who gave their lives in times of war. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the mission in Afghanistan and the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Hong Kong.
“Today we are reminded of the men and women from across Saskatchewan who bravely served and those who sacrificed their lives defending our safety and freedom,” Moe said. “It is our duty to honour these individuals who have served our country and those who continue to serve today.”
The service took place in the Legislative Building rotunda. Following the service, the Premier laid a wreath at the Saskatchewan War Memorial located west of the Legislative Building on Memorial Way. The memorial lists the names of Saskatchewan’s fallen soldiers from the First and Second World War, Korean War, peacetime and peacekeeping operations, and the Afghanistan mission.
The Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial, managed by the Saskatchewan War Memorial Committee, is a website to commemorate Saskatchewan citizens who lost their lives in war. The site features more than 11,000 war casualties and their stories. The site complements the physical war memorial.
