Firefighters from Osler, Warman and Martensville worked together to extinguish an early-morning barn fire near the hamlet of Blumenheim, northeast of Osler, in the RM of Corman Park on Tuesday, November 2.

Osler Fire Department was dispatched at about 6:45 a.m. . Shortly after arrival on the scene, Osler called on Warman and Martensville fire departments to provide assistance.

“The barn was fully engulfed in flames when we got there,” said Osler Deputy Fire Chief Harvey Braun in an interview shortly before noon on November 2. “There was no saving it. It was an older barn that had not been used for quite a few years, and there were no animals in it. Some of the walls of the barn had already collapsed when we arrived.

“There were also two silos nearby that did not have any feed in them.”

Braun said firefighters concentrated their efforts on keeping containing the fire and protecting nearby buildings.

“No one was in the barn,” he added. “We focused our efforts on the outside of the buildings. There was no need for internal fire fighting.”

The fire was contained and brought under control quickly, preventing serious damage to surrounding structures.

Braun said Warman provided an engine and crew members, as well as water tender. Martensville sent out a water tender.

“In a rural area, there are no hydrants,” said Braun. “We had to provide our own water.”

The fire was extinguished by 10:00 a.m. Fire crews remained on scene for about an hour afterward ensuring there were no hot spots.

The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious, said Braun, noting a routine fire investigation will take place. A damage estimate was not available.
