The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is providing $5.47 million through the Municipal Police Grants program for 44 Saskatoon Police Service positions in 2021-22.
“We look forward to working with the Saskatoon Police Service,” Saskatoon Riversdale MLA Marv Friesen said on behalf of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell. “This investment will strengthen our community by supporting those who work to keep citizens safe.”
The funding for Saskatoon supports the continued delivery of targeted policing initiatives, such as the Police and Crisis Team (PACT), which comprises police officers and mental health workers who provide an integrated and coordinated response to persons experiencing mental health crisis in the community.
Funding also supports one new member for the Crime Reduction Team, which gathers intelligence on street gangs and gang associates, as well as the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) program, which is dedicated to the investigation of child exploitation.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance is also providing $900,000 for five positions as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative. This brings the total amount of the Saskatoon Police Service Funding Agreement to $6.37 million for 49 police positions in 2021-22.
“Right now is a crucial time for all levels of government to work together to ensure a safe community,” Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark said. “This includes tackling the serious challenges of addictions and mental health affecting so many families and neighbourhoods. This support from the provincial government is key in building a more coordinated approach that addresses the root causes of these challenges.”
“From the Police and Crisis Team to Internet Child Exploitation to road safety, community safety requires a multi-faceted approach,” Saskatoon Police Chief Troy Cooper said. “We are fortunate and appreciative of the provincial government for the funding they provide, making them an integral partner in the safety of Saskatoon residents.”
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing provides funds to police services across Saskatchewan through the Municipal Police Grants program to support 133 municipal police positions and targeted policing initiatives.
