The Warman U15 AA Wildcats just fell short of a comeback bid after dropping a 6-5 decision to the Swift Current Pure Chem Broncos at the Legends Centre on October 10.
Swift Current jumped out to an early 2-0 in the opening period, but the Wildcats were able to respond after Waylon Gardipy found the back of the net.
By the midway point of the period the Broncos were leading 3-1, however the Wildcats built some momentum on a power-play which led to a Colton Sommerfeld goal. Swift Current scored later in the period to take a 4-2 lead.
Warman began the middle frame on a two-man advantage that carried over from the previous period, and even though the Wildcats didn’t score they were able to grab the momentum and spend more time on the offensive attack.
Hudson Thiessen pulled the Wildcats within one goal on a opportunistic play where he had only the goalie to beat. But again, the Broncos didn’t waiver and netted one to regain that two goal cushion.
The Broncos scored within the first minute of the final period and the Wildcats needed to make something happen. Warman capitalized on a Swift Current turnover in the Broncos’ zone, as Jaxon Herchak fired a wrist which hit iron and went into the net.
The Wildcats continued to put pressure on the Broncos and move the puck well which led to a breakaway opportunity for Carter Bergen, who finished the play with a goal. That was the fourth time in the game where Warman pulled within one goal of the lead.
With around four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest, the Wildcats committed two separate penalties at the same time, and the Broncos had a 5-on-3 power-play for a full two minutes to try and put the game away.
However, the Wildcats killed that penalty and still had a chance to tie the game. In the final minute of the period Warman had multiple scoring chances right in front of the Swift Current goalie, but he made some outstanding saves to keep the lead for his team.
The Wildcats are still looking for their first win of the season after and 0-3 start, but two of those games were only one goal losses.
