The Delisle Rebels got back on the winning track after earning a 48-34 home win over the Humboldt Mohawks on October 8.
Delisle was coming off a loss it suffered against the Martensville Royals, but after a bye-week Rebels head coach Ty Pylypow was glad to see his team make the proper adjustments and respond with a win.
“It did feel good to get the win and I felt like we were a little more prepared this game, so I was proud of the (overall) effort,” he said.
The Rebels got off to a great start defensively by forcing a turnover on Humboldt’s first drive of the game, however, the Delisle offence couldn’t capitalize and ended up punting the ball.
Pylypow was glad to see his defence make a big play early in the contest which gave his players confidence.
“In our previous two games we played they’ve come out a little bit slow and I challenged them on that and I said ‘I want you to, right from the first snap, play the best you can’,” he said.
The defense definitely did that and on Humboldt’s second offensive series of the game, Delisle forced a turnover on downs.
On the ensuing drive, the Rebels started on their own 10-yard line and on the first play, quarterback Tanner Gessell found and open Corbin Ebben for a big catch-and run play for a first down near midfield. A couple plays after that, Gessell got the ball to Ebben again which led to a 47-yard touchdown, to put the Rebels out in front.
That lead was short lived, as Humboldt returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, and after a successful convert the game was tied.
Delisle had a quick response, and after getting the ball near midfield, Ebben scored his second touchdown of the game on the first play of that respective drive.

The Mohawks tied the game again in the second quarter, but an Austin Gramson touchdown put the Rebels back on top and Delisle had a slight 21-14 lead going into the third quarter.
Pylypow said he told his players at halftime to keep doing what they had been doing up until that point, and that the third quarter is the right time to “turn it up a notch and kick in to that next gear instead of slowing down.”
The Rebels took that message to heart and on the second play of the opening drive, Gessell aired it out to Carter Gagne who scored a touchdown.
After Humboldt had a two-and-out on its first drive of the second half, Delisle’s Tyler Sanders returned the ensuing punt for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, Sanders scored his second touchdown of the game on a receiving play.
With the Rebels leading 41-20 Pylypow subbed in some players who don’t see much playing time, and backup quarterback Mitchell Kielo threw a touchdown pass to Sanders.
Humboldt had two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but the Rebels were still able to hang onto the lead.
“We trusted our defence that they could get the stops if and when they needed to; and for the most part they did that,” said Pylypow.
Delisle is scheduled to wrap up regular season play in Martensville October 15, to take on the Royals for a battle of first place in the SHSAA 9-man Football Conference 4 division.
“Right now they’re the team to beat,” said Pylypow. “We know that they’re fast and physical and it will be a good challenge for us.”
