The City of Martensville is likely to extend its current discounted lease rates on civic-owned facilities for childcare groups.

During a committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, September 14, Martensville City Councillors were presented with a report from the city’s recreation and community services department. The report noted that two preschool groups are still facing financial constraints because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Busy Fingers Pre-School uses the MacCormack Ranch House; and Puddle Jumpers Pre-school rents space in the Civic Centre.

In February, 2021, both groups were granted a 25% lease rate reduction for the period January 1 to August 31, 2021. Those leases have now expired.

Martensville Recreation and Community Services Director Ted Schaeffer told council that both groups conintue to operate with a significantly lower number of participants due to ongoing public health restrictions.

He noted that they provide a service to the community. A recommendation in the report to council suggested that the discounted lease rates be renewed until August 31, 2022. Council is expected to vote on the motion to extend the discounted rate at its next meeting on September 21.
