Martensville City Councillors  passed a resolution at their meeting July 20 in favour of the partial closure of Centennial Drive in early September to accommodate the annual A&W 100 car Show and Shine.

The annual event is one of the most popular draws in the city, attracting between 80 and 110 vintage vehicles and thousands of spectators.

This year’s car show on September 11 could be even bigger because last year the pandemic put a damper on festivities.

“There is certainly a degree of excitement and relief that the show can come back this year,” said Martensville Economic Development Officer Dillon Shewchuk in his report to the July 20 city council meeting.

He noted that while there are more businesses opening on Centennial every year, the partial closure of the main north-south commercial thoroughfare through the district actually boosts patronage.

He said traffic is always safely managed.

The car show is organized by the Martensville and District Lions Club and the local A&W restaurant. The day features several events including a feature race at the Wyant Group Raceway.

Martensville City Council also approved a motion at its July 20 meeting to award a tender for water and sewer repairs to DC Trenching. The company submitted the lowest bid in a competitive tender process earlier this month.

Among the work to be done are the replacement of two 150-mm water valves and a 300 mm sanitary sewer inlet valve, as well as repairing three service connections and repair of sidewalks and roads disturbed by the excavation. The city’s total cost for the work is $98,200 plus taxes.

Martensville City Council was also expected to approve a motion at the July 20 meeting to submit a grant application to the Canada Community Revitalization Fund for improvements to pathways in North Hills Park, Kinsmen Park and Hyde Park.
