A one-day sale of Doukhobor bread in early July was so successful organizers are gearing up for a sequel.
Brenda Cheveldayoff said the proceeds from the sale of the highly-popular Doukhobor bread will be used to repair the roof of the Doukhobor Prayer House. An earlier one-day sale on July 4 at the Doukhobor Dugout House southeast of Blaine Lake just off Highway 12 raised a significant amount of money; but it wasn’t enough to cover the whole project.
The bread is baked in a traditional clay oven on the grounds of the Doukhobor Dugout House, and visitors to the site can purchase the bread when they arrive on the grounds. Customers are encouraged to order their bread ahead of time by logging onto www.doukhobordugouthouse.com prior to July 25.
Traditional Doukhobor bread is a popular attraction at the Saskatoon Exhibition, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition was cancelled this year. The only way to buy the bread is by heading to the Doukhobor Dugout House on Saturday, July 25.
Cheveldayoff said the Doukhobor Dugout House is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Doukhobor settlers in the area. The restoration of the roof of the Prayer House is dedicated to the late Donna Choppe, who had worked tirelessly on the project until her untimely passing recently
Cheveldayoff said the total cost of the roof restoration project is $6767.56. So far the group has raised $4,289. They hope to reach their fundraising goal with the July 25 bread sale day.
