The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is hailing the Cities of Warman and Martensville for maintaining the lowest per-person spending amongst all 13 midsize and small Saskatchewan cities in 2024.

The CTF is a citizens’ advocacy group founded in 1990 that fights for lower taes and less waste by government.

On Thursday, October 22, the CTF sent out a press release congratulating Warman and Martensville for keeping per-person spending in check, as indicated in the CTF’s Saskatchewan municipal spending report.

“Warman and Martensville taxpayers need to pressure their councillors to make sure spending doesn’t start to rise,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Warman and Martensville are doing well compared to other cities in the province and should keep it that way.”

With a population of 13,999 residents, Warman spent $1,858 per person in 2024, the lowest out of all the small and midsize cities in the province.

Martensville was 12th on the list with $2,075 in per-person spending for a population of 11,675.

Incidentally, Swift Current was at the top of the list with per-person spending of $3,777 for a population of 17,922.

The two largest cities, Saskatoon and Regina, spent $3,254 and $3,011 respectively.

The data for the report comes from the Saskatchewan government’s online portal for municipal financial statements, which are posted online at saskatchewan.ca.

“Taxpayers pay the bills and they deserve to know how their mayors and councillors are spending their tax dollars,” Haubrich said. “And they deserve to know how much other municipalities are spending in comparison to hold their local politicians accountable when they spend too much.”
