The 2026 Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, hosted jointly by the Martensville & District Lions and Saskatoon Lions on May 31, was able to raise $27,102.65.
The annual fundraiser, which is also referred to as the “Walk with Doug” in tribute to long-time Lions Club member and walk organizer Doug Ward, raises funds to help provide professionally trained dog guides to individuals with various physical and mental disabilities.
The $27,000 fundraising total from this year’s walk makes it the No. 1 event of its kind in western Canada and the fifth top-fundraising Walk for Dog Guides in all of Canada.
“This is the second year in a row the Walk has achieved this honour,” said Lions chair Maria Fowler.
Fowler noted there were approximately 150 people and 40 dogs in attendance at the walk. (Incidentally, all four-legged companions were given a Pup Cup of ice cream for their involvement.)
Fowler thanked all of the participants in the walk, as well as the numerous businesses that went above and beyond contributing raffle prizes and some monetary donations, particularly singling out the Warman and Market Mall Pet Valu stores for their hard work and efforts.
“The Martensville & District Lions and Saskatoon Lions cannot express in words the gratitude we have for this great community,” she said.
Incidentally, anyone wishing to help out the cause can still go online to make a donation at www.walkfordogguides.com.
