The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to cut the provincial gas tax after Prime Minister Mark Carney announcedon April 14 that he’s temporarily cutting the federal gas tax next week.

“Carney is right to recognize that drivers need relief and Moe needs to follow suit,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Saskatchewan drivers are paying record prices at the pump and Moe can give them a break today by cutting the gas tax.”

The price of gasoline in Saskatchewan is about $1.70 per litre. That’s an increase of about 40 cents per litre since March 1.

Carney is cutting the 10 cents per litre federal gas tax until Labour Day.

This will save drivers about $7 every time they fill up a minivan and about $10 when they fill up a pick-up truck.

The Saskatchewan government currently charges a 15 cents per litre gas tax that costs drivers about $11 when they fill up a minivan and about $15 when they fill up a pick-up truck.

“When high gas prices are stretching Saskatchewanian’s wallets, the government shouldn’t be charging taxes on top,” Haubrich said. “Moe needs to follow the Carney’s lead and cut the provincial gas tax to make life more affordable.”

Nearly half of Saskatchewanians say that they are worse off financially this year compared to last year.

The Saskatchewan NDP are also calling on the provincial government to cut the gas tax to make life more affordable.
