For the second year in a  row, the A&W restaurant in Martensville teamed up with Katie Carter from Carter’s Counselling Services  in Martensville to provide Christmas hampers for local families in need.

Rachelle Buffin, owner of the Martensville A&W, said this year was “extra special” because of the high level of donations from loyal guests of the restaurant as well as donations of gift cards from other area businesses.

“We reached a staggering amount of $4,000 in gift cards from local business,” said Buffin. “This year we decided to help the local families who lost their homes when their four-plex on Main Street in Martensville burned down earlier this fall.”

Buffin said it feels good when the community comes together to help those in need.

“Alex Dunlop, a regular guest of the A&W, really took it upon himself to start collecting for these families,” said Buffin. “He really went above and beyond. It’s amazing how one person can impact another person’s life for the better. There’s no better feeling than giving to others.”

She said donations in the form of clothing, non-perishable groceries, cheques, and e-transfers were collected to help the families.

“This is what Christmas is all about,” said Buffin. “Again, a big thank you to the A&W coffee crew, the A&W staff and the residents of Martensville and surrounding area. Merry Christmas!”
