High school and elementary school students in Warman collected 2,826 pounds of food for the Warman Food Bank during the annual Halloweening for Hunger campaign.
Brenda Stokalko, coordinator of the charitable food drive, said there were six students from Holy Trinity Catholic School, one student from Valley Christian Academy, and five students from Bishop James Mahoney High School who participated in the event.
The students, along with parents and other volunteers, collectively canvassed 25 routes throughout the City of Warman on the evening of October 31.
“The amount we collected was amazing,” said Stokalko. “A huge thank you to the residents of Warman that are so generous for this great cause. Thanks also to the Warman Wolverines for having a donation bin, in which 235 pounds of food was collected. The Wolverines donated a signed jersey as a prize for the donations.”
Warman Fire Rescue (WFR) donated the use of one of the bays in the fire hall for sorting and boxing the contributions. A trailer donated by Save Your Back, a local business, allowed for easy loading of the boxed foodstuffs.
The total amount of food collected this year was down from last year’s 3,906 pounds, but was higher than the 2024 total of 2,465 pounds.
Stokalko said she is hoping that next year more students, youth groups, sports teams and other volunteers will get involved.
She added that if any residents who wanted to donate food on Halloween night were inadvertently missed during the October 31 pickup, they are invited to contact the Warman Food Bank to make arrangements for collection.
