The Martensville U13B Pirates hockey team are currently selling “Cookies for a Cause” during their next few home games in support of the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
As part of a team-building and service initiative, the players decorated homemade sugar cookies together and are now selling them for donations to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
The cookie table was set up during the Pirates’ home game at the Martensville Recreation Centre on Sunday, January 18. It will make a re-appearance during their home game against the Comet Surge at the MRC tonight, January 19, at 6:45 p.m.
The cookies will also be available during the Pirates’ home game on Saturday, January 24 versus the Warman U13 Tigers at the Martensville Sports Centre at 5 p.m., as well as the Pirates’ home games on Sunday, February 8 and Saturday, February 21.
As explained by team manager Carmen Herzog, this initiative was created to help their players understand the importance of giving back to the broader community.
“The project combined teamwork, service, and leadership, giving the players a hands-on way to contribute to a cause larger than themselves,” Herzog said.
The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital does hold some personal meaning for the team, as two of their families had children who spent extensive time in hospital.
However, Herzog stressed that the focus of their Cookies for a Cause campaign is on “empowering young athletes to take action, support others, and learn that hockey can be about more than wins and losses.”

Harlowe Yelland, Presley Figurksi and Kaybree Svingen — all siblings of U13B Pirates hockey players — man the cookie table during the Pirates’ January 18 home game at the Martensville Recreation Centre.

The Martensville U13B Pirates wore yellow laces on their skates and decorated their sticks with yellow tape to show awareness of childhood cancer and the importance of the children’s hospital.
