The Saskatoon U22 Prairie Blaze women’s hockey team will host their home-opener at the Martensville Recreation Centre (MRC) this Friday, October 24, which will also serve as a fundraiser for breast cancer research.
The Saskatoon Prairie Blaze are one of six teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League (SJFHL), which provides local female athletes the opportunity to continue playing competitive hockey while pursuing their education or careers in Saskatoon.
This is the team’s third season in the SJFHL and this year they have a new coaching staff.
Last year, the team went 14-4-2 in the regular season and then defeated the Southwest CMX Impact from Swift Current in the playoffs before falling to the Regina Junior Rebels.
The Prairie Blaze held their season-opener on the road against the Regina Wild on October 18, where they fell 7-1.
Their home-opener at the MRC will be against the Outlook Icehawks. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
This match also marks the Blaze’s third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Players will wear pink ribbons and helmet stickers and adorn their sticks with pink tape in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Admission will be by donation, with proceeds —along with the 50/50 draw — going to the C95 Breast Cancer Radio Marathon.
