RCMP and the Corman Park Police are asking residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity in relation to an increase in catalytic converter thefts.

Police in Saskatoon and surrounding areas have seen a dramatic rise in the theft of these converters; in fact, from 14 reported in 2020 to over 300 in 2021. A catalytic converter is a device in a vehicle’s exhaust systems that helps to reduce harmful emissions. Each one contains small amounts of sought-after precious metals, including platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Thieves are usually seen underneath a vehicle for a short period of time while they remove the devices, often using a reciprocal saw.

Generally, theft locations can be anywhere a vehicle is parked, including parking lots, compounds or long-term storage facilities, residential streets and even a person’s driveway; and the thefts are happening at all hours of the day and night.

Police suggest having the device welded to the vehicle, investing in a protective guard or cage, and parking the vehicle in a garage when possible.

Residents can report any suspicious activity they witness or hear about by calling the RCMP at 310-RCMP (7267) or Corman Park Police at (306) 242 8808.

Police plan to increase their focus on these thefts.
