Métis Nation-Saskatchewan Chief Operating Officer Matt Vermette

Following the retirement of Louise Simard as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2020, Métis Nation–Saskatchewan officially welcomes Matt Vermette as the new COO.

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Matt is a proud MN-S citizen with strong Métis roots. An accomplished entrepreneur, academic, and leader, Matt has devoted much of his professional career to working with Métis entrepreneurs, Locals, Regions, communities, and institutions in Saskatchewan.

His extensive work experience spans over twenty years of entrepreneurship, consulting, and business management experience, including fifteen years as an executive manager (in both chief executive and chief operating roles). Through his work and academic experience, Matt has acquired extensive expertise in organizational management, policy analysis and development, business/organizational strategy, governance, organizational analysis, and business planning.

Prior to joining MN-S, Matt was the CEO of the Northern Research Group. An expert in Indigenous economic development, Matt was recently recognized as Saskatchewan’s 2021 Indigenous Economic Developer of the Year by the Saskatchewan Indigenous Economic Development Network. He has advised Métis entrepreneurs on hundreds of business opportunities in every sector of the economy, participated in the creation and enhancement of numerous Métis community economic development corporations, and designed both Provincial and National strategies to enhance Métis entrepreneurship and economic inclusion.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics and a Master’s of Science from the Department of Bioresource Policy, Business, and Economics at the University of Saskatchewan. He has a strong connection to the land and when he’s not working or spending time with his husband Sam and newborn son Archer, he can often be found harvesting game or traditional resources throughout his family’s traditional territory of St. Laurent, Duck Lake, Horse Lake, and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. 2

Matt’s experience, education, and personal background are an incredible asset to MN–S. As a Métis Government, MN-S continues to build capacity with strong hires and ambitious, experienced staff who share our vision for the future of the Métis Nation.
