Since 2005 the Clavet Cougars football team have played in the provincial finals eight times, winning six championship titles.

The 2021 version of the team took the first step in their quest to return to another SHSAA 2A 6-man provincial football final with a convincing 68-35 win over the Unity Warriors in the provincial quarter final game played in Clavet on Saturday, October 30.

The first play of the game, Unity forced a fumble, giving the visitors good field position.

But the Clavet defence responded with an interception on their own fifteen-yard line to turn the tide back in favour of the home team.

On the ensuing possession, Clavet quarterback Trey Goebel hit receiver Tyler Walker for a long touchdown pass. That set the tone for the rest of the game; by the end of the first quarter the Cougars led 22-0 and by the half they had stretched their lead to 44-7.

The Cougars had a total of three interceptions and seven more turnovers on downs. They capitalized on most of those scoring opportunities. Walker accounted for two touchdowns in the game, while teammates Brock Dufort and Asher Thomas-McEachern had three majors each, all on pass and run plays. Goebel added a touchdown on a 12-yard run into the end zone.

The Cougars’ victory means they will now square off against Shellbrook in the provincial 2A 6-man provincial semi-final next Saturday, November 6. Game time is 1:00 p.m in Shellbrook.

In provincial 9-man high school football playoff action last weekend, the Martensville Royals punched their ticket to the provincial semi-finals by downing the Lumsden Devils 62-20 in Martensville on Saturday, October 30.

The Royals are preparing for a road game as they take on Melville on Saturday, November 6 in Melville. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

The Delisle Rebels also advanced to the provincial 9A provincial semi-finals with a convincing 43-6 win last Saturday over Indian Head in a game played in Fort Qu’Appelle. The Rebels are preparing to host Tisdale next Saturday, November 6 in the semi-final.

The provincial 9-man and 6-man football provincial championship games are scheduled for Saturday, November 13. Full details of the playoff brackets are on the SHSAA website.
