Aly Bear has announced that she will seek the 3rd Vice-Chief position in the upcoming Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nation’s (FSIN) election.
Her announcement, at Whitecap Dakota First Nation, was advanced by Chief Evan Taypotat, Kahkewistahaw First Nation in publicly declaring his pledge to nominate Aly Bear.
“Reclaiming our power as sovereign Indigenous Nations is why I want to run for leadership,” said Aly. “I believe that we need to continue the work of those who have come before us, and for our most sacred, the children.”
Aly Bear is a single mother of two who has recently been admitted to the bar. As the first band member to become a lawyer, her strong understanding of the law will be an asset for elevating Indigenous peoples rights across the province.
“As a lawyer, I have made significant strides for my Nation in the area of self-determination and Treaty negotiation, and have developed the skills needed to navigate complex legal and political issues.” Said Bear, “My experience as a single parent has taught me the importance of prioritizing the interests of our children and the need to create and sustain safe and culturally-focused communities.”
Politics is not a new scene for Aly Bear. Her father, Darcy Bear, was elected Chief for a ninth consecutive term in November 2020 and has been serving Whitecap for 30 years.
“My parents and grandparents role modelled work ethic, and family values. My father showed me what it means to be a strong leader and my legal background gave me the skills to walk in both worlds,” said Bear.
Each Chief and Councillor across the province will get to vote on October 28, 2021. The FSIN is responsible for promoting the protection and implementation of Treaty and Inherent Rights, and developing First Nation legislation.
