Legislation legalizing single game betting on football, hockey and other sports has cleared both the House of Commons and the Senate.
Once it receives royal assent, it will become law in Canada.
Bill C-218, a private member’s bill put forward by Saskatoon-Grasswood MP Kevin Waugh received all-party support in the House of Commons in February.
It was also passed in the Senate by a vote of 57-30 on June 22.
Until now, only horse racing has permitted to allow people place wagers on the outcome. The new legislation is aimed at redirecting revenue currently going into the multi-billion dollar black market, US casinos and offshore gambling sites over to provincial government coffers.
According to the Canadian Press, the legislation is welcomed by the Canadian Football League, National Hockey League and other professional sports.
