Two separate fires in Saskatoon on Wednesday, June 23 were determined to be caused by arson.

At 11:12 am on June 23, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) Communications Center received a call reporting a porch on fire in the 1100 block of Idylwyld Drive North in Saskatoon. Three engine companies, one aerial unit, one heavy rescue unit and a battalion chief were dispatched.  On arrival, the fire had been extinguished. Fire crews checked for extensions and hot spots to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The fire investigator attended as this fire was considered suspicious.

While returning to the fire station, a fire crew found a small amount of garbage burning in the same lane of the 1100 block of Idylwyld Drive North. Using a water extinguisher, the fire crew put the fire out.

The fire investigation has concluded. Both fires were arson and the damage is $5,000 total. The Saskatoon Police Service will continue their portion of the investigation.

At this time, the SFD wants to ask our community to look around their properties and put away any combustibles that may become a “crime of opportunity”. If you see suspicious activity, call the Saskatoon Police Service.  Proactive fire prevention measures help preserve property!
