The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) general election is slated for Saturday, May 29, with an advance poll on Saturday, May 22.

Eligible voters will also be able to cast their ballots from May 14 to May 21 at a dozen MN-S regional returning offices across the province.

Electors, who must be registered members of (MN-S), will be choosing a President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary, as well as 12 regional representatives to the MN-S council.

Nominations for the MN-S executive positions opened Saturday, April 24 and close on Thursday, April 29.

MN-S Chief Electoral Offier Gwen LaFond said this is an important election for Métis citizens across Saskatchewan.

“There will be plenty of opportunities to vote in a safe, controlled environment,” said LaFond. “The eligibility has changed this election and only those who have their Registered Saskatchewan Métis Citizenship Card or letter issued from the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan will be eligible to vote.

“Those citizens will bring their card or letter, along with their valid Saskatchewan Health Card and acceptable ID when they vote.”

The definition of Métis as adopted by the MN-S is: “a person who self identifies as Métis, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, is distinct from other Aboriginal peoples, and is accepted by the Métis Nation.”

The Métis Nation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) is the governing authority of MN-S, made up of the Presidents of Métis Locals and the Provincial Métis Council. The MNLA has the authority to enact legislation, regulations, rules and resolutions governing the affairs and conduct of the Métis in Saskatchewan.
